Student-Centered, Agile Learning Spaces in the Canadian Landscape

Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School is in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. The two-story addition includes an elementary school, performing and visual arts spaces, and a new heart for all grades. The design echoes the Canadian Rockies setting, and the surrounding landscape offers multiple opportunities for experiential outdoor learning.  Inside, agile spaces with permeable boundaries and flexible furnishings allow students and teachers to choose how and where they learn.

Engagement for Innovative School Design

Engagement with school communities drives FI’s innovative education space design process. Our designers and educators lead a variety of workshops, seminars and conferences that invite participation from all members of a school community, including students, parents, teachers and administrators. These interactions directly influence the design of the resulting education spaces, going beyond the typical design charrette by including a school’s educational mission, goals, curriculum and ethos.
